Acne is a common skin condition characterized by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and pustules (pustules). It usually starts at puberty and can range in severity from a few patches on the face, back, and chest that most adolescents will have at some point, to a more serious problem that may be embarrassing, sap self-confidence, and cause scarring. The majority of people recover by their late teens or early twenties, but some can remain affected for much longer. The onset of acne can occur in people as late as their mid-twenties or as late as their mid-thirties. Children occasionally suffer from this condition.
What causes Acne ?
Acne is mainly caused by : Acne-prone people's sebaceous (oil-producing) glands are particularly sensitive to testosterone, a hormone both males and females produce. The glands produce too much oil as a result. Moreover, dead skin cells lining the pores don't shed properly, clogging the follicles. Due to these two effects, oil builds up causing blackheads (where small darkened plugs of oil are visible) and whiteheads.
Normally, acne-causing bacteria (known as Propionibacterium acnes) live on everyone's skin without causing problems, but, when the build-up of oil causes acne, these bacteria multiply easily. A red or pus-filled spot appears as a result of inflammation.
